šŸ“” Psychedelics 101: Terms Everyone Should Know

Heroic Dose āš”

A heroic dose is a term popularized by Terence McKenna to describe an extremely high dose of psychedelics, typically 5+ grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms taken in complete darkness and silence.

Itā€™s a concept often referenced in deep psychedelic exploration, mystical experiences, and personal transformation.

A heroic dose is not about recreational useā€”itā€™s intended for profound inner journeys, often leading to ego dissolution, encounters with the subconscious, and intense visionary experiences.

This dosing level requires careful preparation, including proper set and setting, a trusted guide or sitter, and post-experience integration.

Why it matters: For those seeking deep healing, self-discovery, or mystical insights, a heroic dose can offer life-altering revelationsā€”but it also carries risks, including overwhelming intensity, loss of control, or psychological distress if not approached with caution.

šŸ›‘ Take Note - ALWAYS consult with your physician or primary medical provider before taking a heroic dose; Itā€™s best to do this under the supervision of a trained therapist or trip sitter!

Microdosing Psychedelics - Science, Benefits, and the Ongoing Debate

Microdosingā€”the practice of taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics like psilocybinā€”has gained widespread popularity.

Advocates claim it enhances creativity, improves mood, and reduces anxiety and depression without inducing full psychedelic experiencesā€¦

But is microdosing truly effective, or are its benefits largely a placebo effect?

šŸ§¬ The Science Behind Microdosing

Microdosing typically involves taking 1/10 to 1/20 of a full dose of psilocybin every few days.

Users often report improved mood, focus, and mental clarityā€¦ But what does the data say?

The research is still evolving, but some of the early studies are showing promising resultsā€¦

A 2022 study by Maastricht University found that microdosers reported a 21% improvement in mood and a 16% increase in cognitive flexibility compared to a placebo group.

However, objective cognitive measures showed only slight differencesā€”raising the question of whether the effects are biological or psychological.

šŸ“¢ What Microdosers Are Saying

Despite limited scientific confirmation, microdosing enthusiasts share overwhelmingly positive experiences.

A University of Toronto survey found that over 70% of participants reported improved mental health, particularly in managing anxiety and depression.

One participant noted:

"Microdosing has made me feel more creative and less fearful of taking risks. Itā€™s like it unlocked something just out of reach."

However, a 2021 Imperial College London study suggests the placebo effect plays a significant role.

In a blind study, both the placebo and microdose groups reported improved mood and creativity, suggesting that belief in microdosing may contribute to its benefits.

Clearly, more research needs to be done in order to come to stronger conclusionsā€¦

šŸ¤” Risks and Considerations for Microdosing

While many report benefits, microdosing isnā€™t without risksā€¦

A University of Basel study found that regular microdosers develop tolerance over time, potentially requiring higher doses to maintain effects.

Additionally, some individuals reported increased anxiety or irritability with continued microdosingā€¦

As Dr. Harriet De Wit from the Journal of Psychopharmacology explains:

"Microdosing may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those sensitive to serotonin-level fluctuations."

āš–ļø The Verdict - Is Microdosing a Placebo or a Powerful Therapy?

Microdosing remains an intriguing yet unresolved phenomenonā€¦

While preliminary research hints at benefitsā€”such as potential increases in neuroplasticity, as suggested in a 2023 Nature Scientific Reports studyā€”the placebo effect may be a significant driver of its reported success.

For those considering microdosing, the key takeaway is mindful experimentation with proper guidance.

Until more definitive research emerges, the debate continues:

Is microdosing truly transformative, or is the power of belief doing the heavy lifting?

What do YOU think?! Have you ever microdosed?

We would love to hear from you!
